Report: Steve Saunders Ottery St Mary 4 - 2 Brixington Blues
(Scorers - Neil Park, Charlie Norris, Daniel Vincent, Joe Cotterill)
Ottery achieved their best result of the season against tough opposition on a wet and windy morning. Brixington got off to a lively start and opened the scoring midway through the first half. Ottery gained confidence and equalised after a slick passing move that saw Neil Park strike just before half time for his first goal with the club. Ottery dominated the second half and took the lead through another well taken goal from Charlie Norris who seized on a loose ball in the box and scored from a tight angle to make it 2-1. A well timed coaching decision saw Daniel Vincent come on as a forward to make an instant impact with a placed shot that beat the keeper for his first goal aswell to make it 3-1. The Ottery defence of Bradley Gibbins, Hadyn Olney and Jack Saunders blocked a number of attacks and it was a long clearance from Olney that led to another corner which Joe Cotterill crashed into the net to put the game out of reach. Brixington stole a second goal just before the end but it was Ottery who, despite the conditions, worked hard and took the points with a fantastic team performance.
St Martins 2 Ottery St Mary U11s 1 Report: Steve Saunders. Ottery had a small squad for this away game and all the players that were available gave 100% commitment and unlucky to leave without at least a point. The make shift midfield of Connor Swingler, Harry Blake, Darren Spurway and Daniel Vincent had a great performance challenging for every ball, so it had to be a special shot from a St Martins striker that saw the home side take the lead just before half time. Ottery weathered some early attacks in the second half with the back three of Jack Saunders, Hadyn Olney and Bradley Gibbins looking organised and restricting St Martins to long range shots. The pressure finally told after Jack Malden had made a great save diving low to a shot only for the rebound to be slotted home for a second to St Martins. Ottery had the best of the second half with Charlie Norris constantly threatening the home defence. Connor Swingler broke from the halfway line beating two defenders on the way to shoot past the keeper for a great goal to make it 2-1. By this stage, Ottery were camped in the St Martins half but were denied an equaliser when the St Martins keeper tipped a goalbound shot from Swingler over the bar. The Man of the Match award for Ottery went to keeper, Jack Malden for his best display of the season after a series of fine saves throughout the game.
Ottery St Mary 2 Exmouth Town 1 (Scorers - Harry Blake, Jack Saunders) Report Steve Saunders
Ottery worked hard for this result after Exmouth had started as the stronger team and it was the visitors who took the lead midway through the first half after early pressure. Ottery have shown all season that they don't lie down and they bounced back when a corner from Connor Swingler was neatly flicked into the goal by Harry Blake for a well taken equaliser just before half-time. The second half looked fairly even with both sides attacking but it was Ottery who took the lead when Jack Saunders controlled the ball outside the box and with a sweetly taken shot beat the keeper at the far post. Exmouth went all out for a goal and the Ottery back three of Joe Cotterill, Hadyn Olney and Bradley Gibbins held solid through a wave of attacks. Ottery keeper Jack Malden made a great save just before the final whistle diving low to his right to get a hand to an Exmouth shot to see his side through for the three points. This was another fine team performance for Ottery with Man of the match award going to Bradley Gibbins at right back.
Ottery St Mary 7 - 1 Newton Knights (Round 2 Exeter Friendly League Cup) Report: Steve Saunders (Scorers - Connor Swingler 2, Charlie Norris 2, Jack Saunders, Chris Newman, OG )
Ottery progressed into the quarter finals with an awesome attacking display. The midfield quartet dominated possession from the first whistle and Connor Swingler opened the scoring within minutes after jinxing through the defence to shoot. Charlie Norris made it two and then scored his second goal with a fine volley after Harry Blake had broke down the left wing to cross unselfishly into the box. The Newton team fought bravely but another Swingler shot was pushed out by the keeper which Jack Saunders met with a left foot volley high into the top corner. The home side went in with a 6-0 lead at half time after an unfortunate own goal just before the whistle. To their credit, Newton never stopped tackling and their determination throughout the second half saw them score after pressing the home team back. However any hope of a come back ended when Chris Newman scored his first goal for Ottery with a shot through a crowded penalty area. On a day when the keeper and defence looked solid and with the midfield and strikers attacking down both wings, the Man of the Match award went to the entire Ottery team for their best display of the season. Ottery go through to meet Stoke Hill in the next round and will hope for a similar performance.

Ottery St Mary 2 Phoenix 4 Report: Steve Saunders Ottery were unlucky to lose this entertaining game when the result could have gone either way. Phoenix opened the scoring midway through the first half but Ottery equalised with a well taken goal from Charlie Norris who turned with his back to the goal and shot low into the net. The match was played at a fast pace and Phoenix regained the lead after breaking out of defence. Ottery won the midfield battles and Harry Blake broke down the left wing to a cross for Joe Cotterill who shot from distance to make the game 2-2 at half time. Ottery started the second half as the stronger team and Connor Swingler kept the pressure on Phoenix with a series of corners which caused problems. Despite the Ottery possession, Phoenix scored twice in quick succession however the home side refused to lay down. Some great attacking play deserved a goal but Ottery were repeatedly denied by the woodwork, firstly when a Swingler corner hit the cross bar. Jack Saunders then met another corner with a goalbound header that was tipped over the bar and minutes later had a shot pushed onto the post by the Phoenix keeper. A draw would have been a fair result on the day. The Man of the Match award for Ottery went to Bradley Gibbins for a strong display covering right back and midfield positions making every tackle and header in both positions.
Tiverton 6 Ottery St Mary 0 Report: Steve Saunders Ottery travelled to Tiverton on a blustery, wet morning and struggled to get into their usual passing game. With the home side having most of the possession from the whistle, Ottery played on the break which caused the Tiverton defence early problems with Charlie Norris going close on a number of occasions. Tiverton used the space to switch play and to attack in numbers whenever they could and Jack Saunders, Hadyn Olney and Bradley Gibbins were kept busy in the Ottery defence clearing shots and crosses. Tiverton eventually took the lead through a cross which the centre forward tapped home and then used the same move to score a second just before half time. Despite the constant rain, Ottery kept battling until a couple of enforced changes through injury led to further goals for the home side. Ottery keeper, Darren Spurway never gave up and he lifted his side with a great penalty save diving low to push the ball away. Connor Swingler deserved a goal after a long run into the Tiverton box led to his shot being blocked just before the end. The fighting spirit of the team was displayed by Jack Saunders taking the Man of the Match award for Ottery with a determined defensive display right up to the final whistle which, for players and spectators of both sides, could not come soon enough!
Ottery St Mary 2 Tedburn St Mary 1 (Scorers: Charlie Norris, Connor Willis) Despite having players away through illness, injury and the festive holiday, the Ottery boys provided anther strong performance to take all 3 points. Ottery started well and a number of shots from Connor Swingler, Harry Blake and Jack Saunders kept the Tedburn keeper busy in the first half. Ottery took the lead early in the second half when Charlie Norris seized on a shot that was blocked to fire home for another important goal. The Ottery defence looked solid and gave little away to the Tedburn forwards who were constantly driven back. A tactical change saw Connor Willis come on as right winger to give the home side another attacking option, which paid off when he scored the second goal with a well taken shot from outside the box. Tedburn continued to break whenever the chance arose and their efforts were rewarded with a penalty for handball which keeper Jack Malden had no chance of saving. The game was played in great spirit by both sides with goal mouth action at both ends in the final minutes. The hard work and team spirit that the Ottery team displayed resulted in a win in their last game of 2007. Well done to all the squad, good luck for 2008! Ottery St Mary 1-1 Topsham
Brixington 2-3 Ottery St Mary
Ottery St Mary 1 - 2 Culm United Sparrows
Report: Steve Saunders Ottery St Mary 1 St Martins 2
This was a physically challenging match full of hard work and commitment
from both teams. St Martins set the pace with a series of
attacks but goalkeeper Darren Spurway and the defence were in fine form and St
Martins were kept at bay until a shot through a crowded box crossed the line.
The Ottery team just don't accept defeat and were eager to get level before
half-time with Connor Swingler testing the away defence and bringing a couple
of good saves from the keeper.
The second half continued at high pace with chances at both ends. Ottery
got the equaliser they deserved after some good work in midfied with Charlie
Norris driving a cross goalwards for 1-1. The final 10 minutes saw both
sides going all out for a winning goal. Neither side deserved to lose this
one and a number of free kicks and corners from Ottery went close but it was
the visitors who scored a late winner to settle the game.
Ottery refused to give up and to their credit had the visitors pushed
back in their box clinging on as the final whistle blew. On a day when many
of the team could have been Man of the Match, the award went to Joe
Cotterill for another fine display in the midfield.
Exmouth 2 - Ottery St Mary 1 (Scorer: Connor Swingler
Ottery travelled to Exmouth and started strongly, taking the lead early in the first half through Connor Swingler who struck after a goalmouth scramble. Ottery had most of the possession with Chris Newman having a good game in midfield although a late attack just before half time by Exmouth led to an equaliser. The second half was similar to the first with end to end action. The game looked to be settling for a draw when Exmouth had a shot from outside the box which saw the ball bouncing unkindly for the second goal against the run of play. Ottery had a number of chances that on another day would have resulted in a hatful of goals. Joe Cotterill (Man of the Match) had an impressive game having to play out of position on the left wing for Ottery.
Ottery St Mary 3 Heavitree 2 Report by Steve Saunders
Ottery hosted the first home game on a new pitch at Washbrook and wearing
their new kit sponsored by Clarksons of Devon they rose to the occasion.
The first half began with Heavitree's attacking style and Ottery's solid
defending with the back line of Cameron Salter, Hadyn Olney and Jack Saunders
clearing corner after corner in the first 15 minutes. Ottery played on the
break and to their credit took the lead when Charlie Norris neatly deflected a
cross from Connor Willis. Having weathered the early storm, Ottery dominated
the midfield with strong open play in the middle from Joe Cotterell and Chris
Newman making his debut. Harry Blake was a constant threat with his skills and
trickery down the wing and a second goal soon came from Connor Swingler who
passed two players before shooting low past the keeper. Heavitree completed a
highly entertaining half scoring just before half time.
Ottery started confidently after the break with Jack Malden coming on as a
substitute and making an immediate impact with a number of runs into the box.
Despite the strong start it was Heavitree who took a chance to break out of
defence and equalise. By this stage, the Ottery boys were competing and
winning their individual battles across the pitch. As the game reached the
late stages, Heavitree were pushed further back in defence and the
pressure finally paid off when Jack Saunders controlled a clearance to shoot
through a packed penalty area for the winner.
On a day when the man of the match award could have gone to any of the
Ottery team for their contribution, it was awarded to goalkeeper, Darren
Spurway for a great performance. A series of fine goal line saves
included a shot deflected onto the the cross bar keeping his side in the game.
Overall a great team performance.
Ottery St Mary 1 - Phoenix 3
Ottery began the season with a closely contested game away at Wonford
fields (Saturday 8/9/07) and started as the stronger team.
Jack Saunders opened the scoring with a shot from outside the penalty area
after a period of possession in the Phoenix half.
Ottery went close on further occasions with shots from Connor
Swingler and Charlie Norris (Man of the Match) but were unlucky to concede two
quick goals shortly before half time. The second half continued in the same
manner with Ottery dominating midfield possession but could not break
down an organised defence. A late break away attack saw Phoenix score a third although
the final score did not reflect the possession and commitment shown by the
Ottery team.
